Getting Your First Job...
Whether you have time on your hands, need some money or just want to work, getting your first job can be exciting and intimidating at the same time. It's hard to know where to begin. Try these simple strategies:
- Think about your skills and interests. If you love animals and are considering a career as a vet, the local animal hospital may be the perfect place for you to get your first job. If you love sports and enjoy kids, maybe a sports camp is the best option.
- Make a list of possible employers. There are the obvious, including fast food, the neighborhood pool and the local movie theater. Don't be afraid to try something different. If you have an interest in food, you could try a grocery store or maybe a local caterer needs some seasonal help.
- Write a resume. You may not have much to put on it but it shows employers you have put some thought and effort into your job search.
- After you have some ideas about where you want to work, it's time to begin the application process . Many large businesses offer online applications you can complete at home. You may prefer to go in and ask for an application. Large stores, such as Target and Giant, often have kiosks in the store where you can apply online.
